Integrating a historic neighborhood into the urban fabric
Strawbery Banke Museum, a ten-acre site that includes more than thirty historic buildings, envisioned a new building to serve both its ongoing preservation work and its educational mission. The Preservation Center co-locates a workshop and storage for the architectural preservation team, administrative offices, and a multi-purpose space to support education programming.
Placework teamed with Horsley Witten Group to design the narrow site so that all stormwater is retained on site in a series of green roofs and rain gardens. The building is planned for all wood structure, insulation, and siding to minimize embodied carbon and will produce its own renewable energy via rooftop solar panels.
